2007 PRESTATE ANALYSIS
By Will Woodward (ran 15:25 at Sun Willows 1993)
Through 44 District championship races we've identified all 143 Washington State cross country championship qualifiers. From the North Central boys -- one of the top teams in the nation -- to Class B girls' teams that don't have a full seven harriers on their rosters, November 3 will bring together in Pasco any number of interesting stories. Here are a few of them.
An even 100 of this year's 143 teams competed at State in 2006, a repeat rate of 70%. Of those 100, 37 also qualified in 2004 and 2005. 15 of the 143 have appeared in at least 20 State meets.
FIRST STATE APPEARANCES:
Six teams -- three from each sex -- have qualified for State for the very first time. On the boys' side: Eastlake, Southridge and Tri-Cities Prep. First-time girls' teams include Fife, Kingston, and River Ridge.
LONGEST GAP SINCE LAST STATE APPEARANCE:
The Mark Morris boys return to State for the first time since 1973, a 33-year gap that eclipses the previous record of 30 set by the Medical Lake boys (1972-2003).
Both the Ellensburg and Lake Stevens girls will compete at State for the first time since 1980, a 26-year break between appearances.
LONGEST STATE STREAKS EXTENDED:
The Blanchet boys will make their 30th consecutive State appearance and 41st overall, both Washington state records. The Lakewood boys will compete in their 24th consecutive State meet, the second-longest streak in Washington history.
The Newport (Bellevue) girls extend their string to 14 consecutive State appearances. Among girls' teams, only Seattle's Lakeside (21,1977-1997), South Whidbey (16, 1989-2004), South Kitsap (16,1989-2004), Gig Harbor (15,1987-2001) and Mount Baker (15,1977-1991) have had longer streaks.
LONGEST STATE STREAK ENDING:
The King's boys failed to qualify for the first time since 1990, ending a 16-year State streak.
The Ferris boys, four-time defending 4A champions, end their 7 year streak of State qualifications.
The longest streak for a girls' team ending is a mere 4 years by Cedar Park Christian.
MOST ACCOMPLISHED PROGRAMS NOT TO QUALIFY:
Ferris boys. In addition to titles the last 4 years, the Saxons have won State on 3 other occasions and have 12 additional top-4 finishes. But they finished a distant 6th at the Eastern Regional, 3 places and 54 points from qualifying.
Omak boys. The Pioneers haven't qualified for State since 2000, but won 7 titles in the 20th century and finished in the top-4 a total of 16 times. In 2007 they finished 8th at District, 4 places and 97 points from a State qualifier.
Mount Baker girls. The Lady Mountaineers have won 5 State titles and finished in the top-4 12 other times. Their 26 State appearances rank second to Bellarmine Prep among girls' programs. In a strong Northwest District, they finished 6th, 2 places and 34 points from qualifying.
Eisenhower girls. The Lady Cadets have finished in the top-3 at State 12 times in the last two decades, including 4 titles. Their 7th place finish at the Eastern Regional put them 4 places and 74 points from a State berth.
MOST ACCOMPLISHED 2007 TEAMS NOT TO QUALIFY:
These aren't necessarily the BEST teams not in the Pasco field, but those whose record during the season was most impressive.
4A boys: Oak Harbor. The Wildcats placed 6th of 14 at South Whidbey, 3rd of 21 at Seaside, and 5th of 40 at Mt Baker. They missed qualifying for State by 32 points.
4A girls: Mead. The Lady Panthers finished 2nd of 18 at Highlander, 4th of 39 at Mountain West, 1st of 32 at Sunfair, and 4th of 16 at Richland. But the Davis girls avenged their Sunfair loss and edged out Mead for the final State qualifier by 30 points.
3A boys: Liberty (Issaquah). The Patriots placed 2nd of 51 at Fort Steilacoom, 6th of 40 at Sunfair, and 2nd of 12 at Fort Worden. In a tough Sea-King District meet they came up 7 points short of qualifying for their first-ever State berth.
3A girls: Blanchet. The Lady Braves finished 8th of 22 at Bellarmine and 9th of 22 at Hole in the Wall. They missed State qualifying by all of 6 points.
2A boys: Riverside. The Rams finished 2nd of 16 at Farragut, 15th of 40 at Sunfair, and 2nd of 11 at Can-Am. They failed to qualify by 10 points.
2A girls: Murphy. The Lady Wildcats won Vashon Island and finished 6th of 22 at Hole in the Wall. 4A Monroe and 2A Lakewood are the only non-qualifiers Murphy lost to all season. At District they fell 22 points short of a berth.
1A boys: Lake Roosevelt. The Raiders were 5th of 13 at Moses Lake Basin, 9th of 26 at Connell, and won their own invitational. They missed a State qualifier by 2 places and 22 points.
1A girls: Cashmere. From the toughest classification to identify, the Lady Bulldogs probably deserve the nod with their 4th of 14 finish at Ellensburg and 3rd of 13 placing at Moses Lake Basin. At District, 2 places and 29 points kept them out of State qualification.
B boys: Valley Christian. The Panthers placed 15th of 25 at Runner's Soul and missed a State qualifer by 21 points.
B girls: Tri-Cities Prep. The Lady Jaguars placed 6th of 12 at Big Cross and were runners-up in the Blue Mountain League and District meets.

2007 POST-STATE ANALYSIS
By Will Woodward & Rod Wilcox (King’s XC Coach)
WASHINGTON STATE HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY HISTORY
Washington high school cross country traces its state championship history back to 1959. (The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association started sanctioning the State meet a decade later, and girls got a championship meet in 1973.) Some of the interesting facts and figures of the 48 State meets are summarized below. To rank teams, I award 10 points for a championship, 7 points for finishing second, 5 points for third, 3 points for fourth and 1 point for any other State appearance.
ALL-TIME GREATEST BOYS' PROGRAMS
1) Mead High School (218 points) has, by far, the greatest boys' cross country program in Washington history. The Panthers have won a record 14 State titles, including 9 in a row from 1988 to 1996, and have finished no lower than 3rd for 20 straight years.
2) Blanchet (147) has competed at State a record 41 times, including the last 30 years in a row. The Braves have won 8 titles during that stretch. They've been 4th or better 16 times.
3) Despite brutal competition from cross-town rival Mead, Ferris (138) has won 7 titles in the State's largest classification, including 4 straight from 2003 to 2006. The Saxons also have 12 other top-4 finishes.
4) Omak (129) has won 7 State titles as the greatest small school program in Washington history. The Pioneers have 16 total top-4 finishes in 28 State appearances.
5) Counting the histories of both of its predecessor schools, Edmonds-Woodway (110) has 7 championships to its credit, including 6 between 1982 and 1990. The Warriors' 35 State appearances rank second to Blanchet.
6) Despite not having competed at State since 1995, Richland (103) has 24 appearances, finishing 4th or better 13 times, including 5 straight titles in the early 1970s. That run made the Bombers the dominant team of Washington cross country's first three decades.
7) With two 3A championships and two runner-up finishes in the last four years, North Central (93) reprises early success. Between 1971 and 1987 the Indians finished 4th or better 8 times, including capturing the 1977 AAA title.
8) Seattle Prep (92) has won 3 championships, each in a different decade. The Panthers have finished among the top 4 on 13 occasions.
9) The second-most accomplished school since 1990, Saint George's (82) has won three B titles, including the last two. The Dragons have finished in the top 4 eight other times.
10) King's (79) finished 22nd and last in the very first State meet in 1959. The Knights have avenged that ignominy with 4 titles, 3 runner-up finishes and a streak of 16 State apperances.

OTHER NOTABLE FACTS AND FIGURES
ONCE GREAT.
The Montesano boys (14th boys, 74 points) are the most accomplished boys' program not to qualify for State in the past 14 years. Shadle Park (25th, 54) is the most accomplished not to qualify for State in the past 20 years. Spokane's Rogers (41st, 39) is the most accomplished not to qualify for State in the past 33 years.
The Issaquah girls (16th girls, 63 points) are the most accomplished girls' program not to qualify for State in the past 9 years. Ferris (21st, 46) is the most accomplished not to qualify for State in the past 12 years. Defunct Carroll (24th, 43) is the most accomplished not to qualify for State in the past 22 years. Defunct Shoreline
(67th, 17) is the most accomplished not to qualify for State in the past 31 years.
Edmonds-Woodway (3rd combined, 190 points) is the greatest combined program not to qualify either boys or girls for State in 2007. Mount Baker (7th, 178) is the greatest combined program not to qualify either team for the past 3 years. Montesano (23rd, 107) is the greatest combined program not to qualify either team for the past decade.
ONCE UNKNOWN.
Gig Harbor (12th boys, 77 points) is the most accomplished boys' program not to qualify for State until 1980. Lakewood (22nd, 59) is the most accomplished not to qualify for State until 1984. Interestingly, the Cougars have qualified for State every
year since. Nine Mile Falls' Lakeside (26th, 53) is the most accomplished not to qualify for State until 1996.
Saint George's (7th girls, 93 points) is the most accomplished girls' program not to qualify for State until 1992. Squalicum (19th, 48) is the most accomplished not to qualify for State until 2001.
Gig Harbor (6th combined, 182 points) is the greatest combined program not to qualify either boys or girls for State until 1980. Lakewood (25th, 103) is the greatest combined program not to qualify any team until 1984. Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls (47th, 58) is the greatest combined program not to qualify any team until 1996. Squalicum (50th, 56) is the greatest combined program not to qualify any team until 1998.
ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID.
Spokane's West Valley boys (16th boys, 70 points), the greatest program never to win a State championship, have competed at State 21 times, six times finishing 2nd, twice finishing 3rd, and three times finishing 4th. The Eagles came closest to winning in 1983, when they lost the AA title to Edmonds by 9 points.
Gig Harbor and Lakewood have both been to State 24 times with only one title each. Meanwhile Kelso, with 26 State appearances and one 3rd place trophy, holds the record for most State meets without a championship.
For the girls, Blanchet (25th girls, 41 points) is the greatest program never to win a State title. In their 17 State appearances the Lady Braves have been 2nd twice, and the closest they've come to winning was a 34-point gap in 1991. As with the boys, Kelso, with 23 State meets holds the record for most appearances without a championship. The Lassies' best finish is fourth (1984 and 1994).
Naturally, Kelso (51st combined, 55 points) is the greatest combined program without a title. The boys and girls teams have combined for 49 State appearances. Burlington-Edison (37th, 75) is the greatest combined program never to send its girls' team to State. Jefferson (130th, 19) is the greatest combined program never to send its boys.
Burlington Edison has had 20 boys on the podium at State but never on the top step.
FREQUENTLY A BRIDE.
Shadle Park won the first State championship in 1959. Three years later in 1962 the Highlanders became the first team to win a second title. Richland (1972, 1973 and 1974) was the first school to win 3, 4 and 5 titles. Edmonds-Woodway's ten titles between 1982 and 1990 made them the first school to win 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 titles. Then Mead (2001, 2002 and 2007) became the first school to win 13, 14 and 15 championships.
PERFECTION.
The Chief Sealth girls first competed at State in 1975, and finished 1st of 15 teams. The girls' championship that year did not separate by classification. The Lady Seahawks have not returned to State since, making them the only team -- boys or girls -- to have a perfect record in State championships.
BIGGEST BREAK.
The Burlington-Edison boys won their first title as a class A team in 1967; the Tigers' second came 39 years later in the 2006 2A race. Winlock first appeared at State in 1960, finishing 24th of 27 teams. It took 41 years before the Cardinals returned to the State meet, when they finished 8th in the 2001 1A/B race. Mary M.
Knight High School also ran in that 1960 race, but the Elma school hasn't been back to the State meet. Currently without a cross country team, the Owls likely will extend their Stateless streak beyond the present 47 years.
The Bellarmine Prep girls won their third straight title in the 1979 AAA race, then waited 24 years before capturing the 2004 4A championship, the longest gap between titles for any girls' team. The Meadowdale girls competed at State three of the first five years, placing 3rd, 3rd and 6th, and then waited 28 years until finishing 13th in 3A in 2006, the longest gap between State appearances.
FROM WHERE DID THEY COME.
Of the 268 champions, 85 (32%) were champs the year before. Over half had finished in the top three. But 30(11%) hadn't competed at State the previous year, and 9 of those were at State for the first time in team history. That includes 1961 champions Lewis & Clark and 1977 A girls champions Mount Baker. While
the former didn't return to State until 1966, the latter defended in 1978. Both are the only teams to win titles in their first two State appearances.
WHERE DID THEY GO.
Of the 258 State champions through 2006, 85 (33%) successfully defended their title the following year. Nearly half as many (42, 16%) failed to qualify for State the following year, however. The Ferris boys have recorded that dubious honor on three different occasions. The Seattle Prep boys and Yakima's West Valley boys have each done it twice.
INDIVIDUAL PERFECTION.
Few individuals have been on 4 state championship teams. Obviously it is hard for a freshman to make a state championship team. During Mead’s 9 title streak, no individual ran all four years at state. The honored few are; Randy Rice-Richland 70-73, Cara Smith-East Valley Spokane 94-97, Ann Marie Adams-East Valley Spokane 94-97, Brandon Thompson-King’s 99-02.
THE GREATEST PERFORMANCES IN WASHINGTON CROSS COUNTRY STATE CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY SINCE 1988.
Considering the course venue and distance changes, it is too arguable to compare all years. Since the change to a 5K course in 1997, course changes are minimal and allow for a comparison with few arguments.
